Our Mission
The Public Learning Media Laboratory applies new scientific findings and technological solutions to create systemic improvement in elementary and middle school education.
To achieve our objective, we provide educators with free, high-quality, web-based instructional and exploration tools, accompanied by technological and pedagogical models, they can use to help students develop clearer, stronger, quicker understanding of challenging concepts. We are particularly focused on providing tools that teach math, science and information literacy.
Our web-based technologies, called Glean Learning Tools, help students master challenging concepts they must learn to succeed. By using visual elements to model the breadth and depth of a concept, and the interactivity of a technology to provide feedback to learners, challenging concepts can be more easily understood.
Yet we know that technologies are only a part of the solution, and that effective teachers are critical to students’ success. Thus, each Glean Learning Tool we provide is accompanied by pedagogical and curricular examples that model effective engagement, technology integration and instruction.
Finally, we work toward systemic change by distributing our Glean Learning Tools through existing change agents - national educational organizations, school districts and innovative educator networks that recognize the importance of integrating exemplary instructional practices in improving student outcomes.
We believe the strong combination of high-quality pedagogy, effective technological integration and clear, concise modeling provided by interactive technologies, propelled through change agents’ networks, strengthen students and embolden educators to seek greater success.
